Year 9 Overview


 

A Range Of Possibilities


The focus at year 9 is the development of the student as an individual,
with the range of courses offered designed to inspire and challenge.
All students undertake core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science,
Humanities and Physical Education. A wide range of electives are offered
which allow students to pursue areas of interest, making personal
decisions about their subject choices, students are encouraged to take
greater responsibility for their education.


Students complete the Morrisby online career assessment tool giving
them insights into their personal strengths and helping them explore
ideas for their future pathway. Year 9 students are also involved in
industry tours where they can they visit key training organisations who
focus on specific industries.


There are also a number of special programs operating which are
designed to develop personal skills such as leadership, teamwork, self
esteem and good citizenship.

 


Broad Horizons


The Broad Horizons Program (BHP) is a unique elective for year 9
students. The program offers a nine-week alternate curriculum,
based at the Mornington Life Saving Club. Students engage in practical
learning activities and challenges which promote the development of
interpersonal skills, leadership and teamwork as well as interesting
theoretical units which are highly relevant to the world in which we
live.


Students also have the opportunity to undertake a variety of unique
and exciting excursions and learning expriences in Melbourne and
on the Mornington Peninsula, as well as provide reading, writing
and numeracy assistance in the junior classrooms at a local primary
school. Students spend time at The Corner Youth Centre working on
a community project as well as being visited by guest speakers from
various organisations on topics that affect young people. In addition,
there is an action-packed three-day camp: Term 1 and 4 BHP groups go
to Lorne for a Surf Camp, Term 2 gets to experience horse-riding in
the alpine region of Merijig and the Term 3 group tackle Mt Stirling on
a cross-country skiing adventure.
