Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETis)
Mornington Secondary College continues to achieve outstanding completion rates in all our VETis programs. VETis assists students to make the transition to further education, training and employment as they are designed to develop general work related competencies, skills and knowledge required in a particular industry. A VCE VETis program may also contribute to a student’s ATAR.
VETis programs allow students over the age of 15 years to gain the VCE/VCAL and a Certificate II or III qualification. VETis promote an awareness of the world of work through work placement, develops work related skills in communication, team work, technology, problem solving, mathematical ideas and concepts, occupational health and safety as well as develops skills and knowledge required in a particular industry and gives students a competitive edge in looking for casual and/or full time employment.
Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning
VCAL is offered to our senior students at Year 11 and 12 and a Pre-cal is offered at year 10. These courses provide additional pathways for students interested in vocationally oriented career options, TAFE or employment. Year 11 students complete the VCAL Intermediate level and Year 12 students complete the senior level. VCAL is a more hands-on option for students giving them the opportunity to experience different careers or train for their selected career. Subjects studied are Literacy, Numeracy, Personal Development Skills and Work Related Skills. Students are also expected to undertake either an SBAT or VETis program as part of their Year 11 and 12 VCAL studies. All Year 11 and 12 students must also complete a work placement in industry for one day per week. VCAL operates alongside the VCE and is an accredited senior secondary qualification which allows students to enter TAFE, further study or traineeship/apprenticeship or employment at the completion of their studies.
School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs)
Australian School Based Apprenticeships are available to students over the age of 15. Apprenticeships and traineeships combine paid work with accredited training and are covered by a relevant industrial award. This combination of work and training provides the opportunity to develop practical skills with formal training. Trainees are employed under a state government-approved contract, usually for the duration of one-two years. Students must have an employer willing to take him/her on as a trainee or part-time apprentice. The student may be required to attend the workplace during the school week but they can also be completed outside of school hours. SBATs can be credited towards VCE/VCAL qualifications.
